They trot it out there every year at Oscar time — “the honor is being nominated, win or lose” — and it sounds nice. Then everyone promptly forgets the honorees who don’t go home with the little gold guy.

So as much as folks might want to believe that the honor among NBA players is simply being invited to participate in the USA Basketball program from which the national team gets drawn for Olympic and FIBA World Cup competition, the numbers suggest otherwise.

Thirty-four aspirants to Team USA will take part this week in meetings, light workouts and a scrimmage no more intense than a typical NBA All-Star Game. A year from now, though, only 12 of them make the trek to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in pursuit of gold in the 2016 Olympics.
