When Jerry Colangelo emerged as a driving force behind the effort to bring Major League Baseball to the Valley, George Steinbrenner was among his bigger supporters.

Later, when Colangelo was an actual competitor, the relationship wasn’t so friendly.

So we wondered how Colangelo would remember Steinbrenner, who died Tuesday of a massive heart attack at age 80, and how Colangelo believes we should remember “The Boss.”

“It’s a big loss for the world of sports and for Major League Baseball,” Colangelo said. “He was an icon. He was very controversial, very competitive, but he brought a real flavor to the game.”
