It was 2005, not long after he had been given a new role in the basketball world as executive director of USA Basketball, when Jerry Colangelo convened one of the most high-powered hoops meetings in history. He was tasked with reconstructing Team USA in the wake of the 2004 Athens Olympics debacle, which had seen ungracious attitudes, poor play and a bronze medal from the mish-mashed American side. So Colangelo gathered up great Olympic coaches and players, from Larry Bird and Magic Johnson to legendary coach Pete Newell, to talk about the plight of USA Basketball and how to fix it.
